the omen (twentieth century fox, 2006) isn’t the first film less compelling than the average hour of end times radio, but it is one of the few to be based on the same passages in scripture. part of the problem is that it doesn’t seem creepy that the devil is born into the family of a us consular official, it seems redundant, like the movie itself. In the all-too-faithful remake’s only significant variation on the 1976 version, the popes and his Vatican friends read the coming of the antichrist in slides of current events. At least when pentecostal preachers do similar things on the radio, they take the catholic church as one of the signs of the apocalypse.

the da vinci code isn’t the first film to blaspheme against our lord jesus christ, but, even at a paltry $125,000,000, is the most expensive. in the good old days of heresy, when god still had enough twizum to close major markets to players who had offended him, blasphemy tended to be cheaply produced. in hollywood, where god has just enough clout help to green-light the chronicles of narnia and the passion of the christ, finance capital opens all markets to those who can pay the entry fee. as a result, sony and friends, pleased with dan brown’s literary sales, invested a few more than thirty pieces of gold in the film. in order to receive a return on its investment, sony made the da vinci code so as to minimize the risk that the film might offend anyone. one can’t tell if anyone in the film believes that jesus fathered children with mary magdalen. god, in his infinite wisdom, has made heresy impossible, not only through his own inexistence, but also by transubstantiating blasphemy into a financed product in a global market.
