rrr finds genre film allegory not worth pursuing!

ultraviolet (1006, screen jems/ sony) is not the only incoherent action movie staring milla jovoich, but it is the most recent. nothing about this film interested me, except of the possibility that the narrative meant to ask the question: what if today’s terrorists where aids patients? confronting audiences with this question in amore precise manner than the film is capable of might shift our affect slightly with regards to current events. as it is the film seems to have a certain nostalgia for aids as a more treatable condition than that driving contemporary terror. even worse, that allegorical strain makes us think that aids has passed. (if one really wanted to spin one’s wheels, one might make remarks on the fact that the narrative seems to concern the toppling of a religious state (the “archdiocese”) which attempts to make everyone sick in order to sell them a drug to manage the illness thus profiting and maintaining social control. one might rev up a tale of biopolitics. one might really do donuts with one’s system up at 11 and the windows rolled down if one then read ultraviolet’s genetic variant eon flux (2006, mtv)the same way.)

instead of pursuing various allegorical readings or critiquing what little technique there is in the film, we will merely report a phrase of debord’s that one of us read while trying to go to sleep after the film. one might easily deturn ultraviolet to express it:

“the si is a specter haunting the world.”

to which we would only add: “now more than ever.”

the si has passed, but its ghost constantly reminds us that our only possibility for a future lies in absolutely rejecting the forces of wage and commodity that degrade and regulate our lives. our negation can only happen through the deliberate construction of situations allowing us to actualize our desires, rather than the “desires” of our oppressors.

how do you live? are you satisfied? don’t be intimidated by the advertisements telling you are happy because of god, sonicare toothbrushes, or a position at a university.

comrades, fuck shit up!
